“Tantrics have emphasised
the eclipse power
since time immemorial.
Yogic ritual done upon an eclipse
is said to be 100 times more challenging,
yet 100 times more powerful
in its effect.”

WHAT IS 'WORKING WITH THE SHADOW'?

A short interview with Boonath.

A NEW four part ritualistic Tantric series of embracing the eclipses is upon us. Eclipses both of the Moon and the Sun.
We have a very powerful season of eclipse in this next Lunar phase.

When there is a full Moon Eclipse the sea raises her tide higher than at any other time, this force affects us on bodily & psychic levels very deeply. An eclipse upon the dark Moon takes the ebb of the tide to its furthermost point, again this phenomena is mirrored in our psychic and physical organism, offering a powerful opportunity to work with the spiritual world that we are.

Tantrics see the lunar eclipse as a time when the Full Moon Goddess moves deep into the Earth’s shadow.
This will happen on Monday 30th november as the earth on this coming full moon night will block the light of the sun from reaching her.

This is followed by a solar eclipse at the opposite lunar pole of the Dark Moon of the 14th of December, that will be the last dark moon of the darkening season before the Winter Solstice ushers us into the lengthening of the days.

Solstice is the Longest night of the whole year. It is the ritual night of Kali Puja, that is the ritual of approaching Kali Ma, the dark mother of womb healing. Between the Full Moon and the Dark moon, on the Descending Siddha half Moon, we have the Birthday of the Darkest form of Shiva, Kaal Bhairav. Kaal Bhairav holds the secrets beyond the dark door of Time, beyond the threshold of time, he faces us with our deepest fears. Kaal Bhairav opens the magic door of the place where we fear to tread.

DEVA DIWALI | Worlds of Illusion

30 November | 19:oo-23:oo CET

On this night of rituals we shall practice both internal and external (antar and bhar) Chandra Grah Mudras.
Chandra Grahasan is a twisting Moon posture that challenges the mid section of the body most profoundly. It’s effect is to raise the hidden and eclipsed energies of the Goddess Chakra that Tantrics know as Shaktistan, literally, “the land of the Goddess”.
This will be assisted with antar (inner) mudras to go into psychic dark spaces and meet the unseen parts of ourselves.
This is the very definition of the Left Hand Path of Aghora – Aghora means ‘the one who follows the way of Darkness and Light’. Just like nature does.
Read our blog post for more details about this Tantric ritual & the myths connected to it…

KAAL BHAIRAV JAYANTI | Night of the Ancestors

07 December | 19:oo-23:oo CET

Bhairav Jayanti is the annual ‘birthday’ of Kaal Bhairav. It is a time in which to Study death. The Planet Saturn is highly active upon the inner astral plane in the Northern most hemisphere.
This night of Bhairav is sandwiched right between the last Full and Dark Moons of the Darkest Season of the year, when the length of the nights are at their peak.
The 8th night of lunar waning every month is Sacred to Bhairav – darkest form of Shiva. The eighth descending lunar night is known as Bhairav Astami, or Kaal Astami. Kaal means ‘time’, Astami means the ‘eighth’. This is the descending siddha Moon of the crow.
The last Bhairav Astami of the dark half of the year is the most sacred one and is Bhairav Jayanti, that is commonly called the ‘Birthday’ of the great Bhairav, the deity of fear.
His mudras are Maha Kaal Asan and Kashi Mudra. These physical movements send the spirit North to the world beyond.
In this ritual we might well chant his 64 names, if we come that far. By tradition, his Bija mantra is never written, but it will be uttered in this dark night’s ritual as part of a powerful healing practice concerned with facing our sense of time, facing our deepest fears and peering into the mysteries and magic beyond the veils of Death.

SOMAVATI AMVASYA | Dark Moon + Solar Eclipse

Honouring the Ancestors

14 December | 19:oo-23:oo CET

The day of Somavati happens rarely, one or twice yearly when a dark Moon falls on a Monday, it is a strong ritualistic time, when it is combined with an eclipse it is made more profound, a most rare occurrence it be. It is a time to give homage to the deceased ancestors. To perform Shraddh (psychic ritualistic offerings) this is to bless & heal the spirits of one’s dead ancestors. To assist in earthbound elements that can affect us in the Astral world, tantrics call this effect the Pitru Dosha. Somavati is a sacred ritual time of liberating Pitru Dosha.

The New Moon sequence of Chandra Parampara supports this and is ritualistically practiced by the tantrics at this Moon junction. Chandra Parampara is the Yog sequence of practice that among all the practices of Yog. It creates the greatest softening and flexibility in the organism, both psychicaly and physically.
Prayer and ritual under the Soma Moon is a time of opening body and soul towards the deepest levels of softness.
Simplification is the way to Soma… and the way of Soma.
We shall work with the three liquids that make up Soma: Wine (life), Milk (desire) & Water (surrender). They equal Soma if they are balanced in equal equations.
Blood, Milk and Water shall lay upon the altar on this a Dark Moon night – the Darkest Moon of the Year.

SOLSTICE | The Night of Kali

21 December | 19:oo-23:oo CET

Silver, Gold and Iron meet upon this night in their full splendor, the longest night of the year unifies the Moon, Sun and the Black planet Shuni (Saturn).
The next Morning the rising light will melt the cycle that we have been in and the solar force will lengthen the days in the endless cycle of life and death.
The winter solstice presents a polarity shift.
A big planetary rotation of forces occurs as the longest night of the year and takes us to the very depth of outer darkness. This long night has a very deep energy that can be observed by listening to the currents of our inner world. It is a night as deep as the womb of Kali Ma, the womb from whence we came and to which we will return. Tantrics have followed these junctions since time immemorial and aligned themselves in concentrated ritual to the currents of nature.
We will follow suit and partake of many a dark mudra and mantra on this night of ceremony to the Dark Mother, Kali Ma herself.
Practices of working with the womb are central to this night. What more can be said other than that it is a deep place, indeed the deepest cave of all creation.

REGISTRATION

ANCIENT & SACRED

On these healing circles you will practice a form of Yoga that is rarely available and accessible even in India today. You will take part in a sacred Yogic tradition that roots itself in India’s native shamanic wisdom & Tantric lineage handed down orally between generations of Yogis, Babas, Sadhus and Fakirs.
You will be exposed to the old tantric ways of seeking profound healing and spiritual awakening, including practicing in darkly-lit spaces to quieten the mind and awaken the senses to the body’s subtle energy currents, holding simple postures for long periods of time, and engaging in powerful breath-work to open-up the body and take the mind into altered states of consciousness.

GENTLE

The practice draws on postures seldom used in modern styles of yoga, ancient sequences that honour the mother and the divine feminine, gently opening-up the body to its highest levels of flexibility through minimal effort.
Integral to this experience will be the exploration of sound-currents present in the body (Nada Yoga) – perhaps one of Yoga’s greatest secrets and one of the most powerful vehicles through which the karmic patterns stored in the chakras can be accessed and released in pursuit of profound healing.

UNIQUE

Unique to this tradition is its simultaneous employment of Asanas (postures), aerobic & anaerobic Pranayam (breathwork), Mudras (gestures), and Mantras (sacred sounds).
The synergy created by the employment of these various yogic tools will lead you into altered states of consciousness and dream-like experiences aimed at facilitating a greater openness to inward journeying and an easier access to your subconscious.

UNBOUND

Because we are going to play with shamanic yogic traditions, the practice will take place outside of clearly time constraints. Generally, the practice will last about 6 hours, but if the group is ready to practice longer we might carry well into the night.

INCLUSIVE

The Circle is open to those interested in the healing path.
Tantra and Yoga practitioners, and those seeking healing, practitioners of the mystic arts. Both advanced and beginners will find a place in this circle.
If you have had or are having psychosis please get in touch directly with us as this is important to know about in this work. The same goes for those with strong mobility issues. Drug and alcohol users also need to inform us of their condition. Thank you.

The practie usually takes place in the dark or darkly-lit spaces.
The pictures below were taken in daylight to capture the flow of a practice.

BOONATH

ben2

BOONATH was born into a life of yoga. He grew up between Europe and India and was introduced as a child to yoga through his grandparents who were on both sides yoga practitioners.
His grandparents took him on his first Himalayan pilgrimage when he was just seven years old and he has been exposed to the world of yogis ever since.
Boonath has taken  initiation into the left hand path (that’s the path of the heart) and specialises in the branch of Chandra Parampara, that is a secret style of Moon practice that works with the night forces. It is a style of tantra that goes very deep into the subconscious roots It is first and foremostly a Healing System. Most of his family still lives in India and he has been travelling there regularly throughout his life  in pursuit of yoga. He has worked closely in apprenticeship with elders in the line of Siddha systems of healing and holds much knowledge in the use of rituals, mantras and body/spirit healing methods among other things.
Boonath has been working in this line and helping people with the implementation of these techniques for over 25 years to successfully overcome mental and physical problems, from chronic pain to addiction.
Boonath’s healing and yoga work sees him travelling across the whole of Europe to give workshops and healing sessions.  His travels and yoga workshops
continue to benefit people in deprived circumstances.
In recent years Boonath has been living and teaching yoga in Germany where he has a network of students. It was in Berlin that Boonath met Kim, with whom Boonath co-founded Working with the Shadow in 2014.

Formal studies and encounters have all left their impression on Boonath, but his teachings are deeply rooted in the Shamanic traditions of the mystical Babas and Fakirs of India, with whom Boonath has been studying closely since childhood to the present day.

KIM

KIM is an Eco-Activist turned Yogi and the founder of Healing in the Willows, the retreat company hosting Working with the Shadow, which he developed in 2014 in collaboration with Boonath, who he assists with the teaching. Kim discovered Yoga in 2005, following a burn-out at work that brought him onto the path of ‘Yog’. Kim had spent over 10 years coordinating international environmental campaigns in Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin for major environmental NGOs, including Greenpeace, WWF, Friends of the Earth, ActionAid, and many others.
Kim practiced Yoga with many teachers from several modern styles of Yoga (including Iyengar, Astanga, Vinasa, Bikram, Sivananda, Scaravelli, Kundalini) all over Europe, India and further afield. In 2011 Kim set up a first yoga collective in Berlin, which he then expanded to a new location in 2013, in one of the economically deprived areas of town that was undergoing gentrification. The collective brought together a variety of local teachers to promote yoga on a donation basis within the surrounding community unable to afford the increasing cost of living. It was there that Kim met Boonath and, through Boonath, that his understanding of what Yoga is and what Yoga can do shifted entirely. Boonath’s rare and ancient Tantric lineage revolutionised Kim’s understanding of Yoga and initiated him into a mystical healing journey that impacted strongly also on Kim’s activist work.
Since then Kim has been collaborating with Boonath on developing Working with the Shadow through the retreats, workshops and online classes.

“It shifted my understanding of what Yoga actually is,
on a fundamental level”
