“If we are to be truly effective
in the meeting of the sacred heart,
immediate concerns must be addressed
& not avoided by going into extraneous involvements.
This is the grounding of desire.
It is a fortifying and nourishing way
towards the fulfilment of Love.”

WHAT IS 'WORKING WITH THE SHADOW'?

A short interview with Boonath.

This is a new 4-part series dedicated to the Goddess Kamala who rules over the present Lunar phase, starting with the October Full Moon and ending with November’s Half Moon.
The Goddess’ name Kamala contains the work ‘Kama’, which is central to this lunar month.
Kama can be translated as ‘Desire’.
We find this word in the title of the well-known Indian manual of Love and Desire, ‘The Kamasutra’ – literally, ‘the verses of desire’.

Kama is the God of Desire, the raw principle of desire. Kama is known for shooting his 7 arrows into the seven chakras and cause infatuation and longing.
Tantric wisdom shows us that Love is nothing more than grounded desire. This is the secret implicit in the name of the a Goddess of Love Kamala.

Love is nothing more than grounded desire.
Ungrounded desire, instead, becomes restless ambition,
which turns into addiction, obsession, co-dependence
born of an inner unfulfilled neediness.

Ungrounded desire, on the other hand, becomes restless ambition. It is represented by the archetypal figure of The Sick King, full of hot air and hope but no Pyar Shakti (Love Power). Ungrounded Desire/Love turns into addiction, obsession, co-dependence born of an inner unfulfilled neediness.
The last Bija mantra ‘La’, in the name of Kamala brings grounding to the desire principle.
The La grounds desire – La being the Bija (seed) syllable for the Kunda, that is the pot that houses Kundalini Shakti at the root of our body. It is the very base of our being.

The antar (inner mudras) that we shall work with at this time comprise of what is known in Tantric science as Gupt Mani Karana mudras. This translates as the work with the inner jewels, or the secret of the seven jewels (Saptmani).
Gupt means secret, mani is a jewel, and Karana means to do.

We will practice the royal gestures,
both in an inner and outer sense to one’s countenance
They bring grace comprised of physical & psychic gestures.
These are royal mudras
which lead onto the Raj & Rani Mudras,
& the Kumar & Kumari Mudras.

On this sacred ritual night the tantrics do the doings of the seven secret inner jewels.
The different jewels relate to different planetary energies, as they vibrate in accordance with planetary vibrations. The jewels have relation to the chakras and we will explore this relation as part of this four part ritual.

FULL MOON | Kumar Purnima Puja

Saturday 31st October

On this ritual night we approach Kumari – the princess within. We shall go deep into her stance and vision. From the Shakti chakra that grows in the roots of creation, where she is a potential of life and Love. We will look to her opposite in the upper sky. The polarities will meet in a vision of twilight. She will set herself upon the inner voyage of the jewel of the inner Kumar as the magnetic opposites within us attract each other. As the Jewel of Shakti ascends, Shiva descends. They match each other’s dance and enthusiasm. That which stands between them, that which stands in the way of Love, is the Tantric investigation we shall engage in upon this sacred ritual night.

HALF DESCENDING MOON | Thakka Ardha Chandra Puja

Sunday 8th November

We shall work towards the meeting of the inner Kumari and Kumar – the Princess and Prince. We will work upon our relationships that we have known in the past and study the seed impulse that arose at the first meeting. Often at the first meeting, the chemistry and the seed of potential is felt in its raw and embryonic state. This is the Siddha phase of the Moon (the time of intense power), when a potential is birthed. The opposite mirror reflection half-moon of the descending phase is known in Tantra as the Sukkha phase. The Sukkha phase is when things are released and brought to fruition – this will be the subject of our 4th and final meeting for this series (22nd of November). If we observe carefully in our Tantric Sadhana, we will notice that, what we plant on the Siddha phase of the Moon, is brought to fruition on the Sukkha phase. Magic works by the law of reflection. These are closely kept secrets that are easily discoverable upon careful observation of our psychic life.

DARK MOON | Kumari Amvasya & Diwali Festival of Lights

Saturday 14th November

This is without doubt, the biggest celebration in the Indian culture, known broadly as the Diwali Festival of Lights. The myth narrates of how the Goddess Sita is stolen away from her beloved Raam by the amorous clutches of the powerful Yogi Ravan – read our blog entry to learn about this beautiful myth and its meaning. When Ravan stole Sita away, Raam – the great Solar power – lost his Moon. Darkness and destruction then fell upon the world. Amvasya is the absence of light when the Moon is dark. On this night Tantrics study the Ravan within ourselves, the part of us that wishes to impatiently possess the Goddess before we have won her hand and trust. It is a night that has been prayed by Tantrics since the beginning of time for the return of the Goddess and we shall meet to mourn her loss, and celebrate her return (if we have earned it).

HALF ASCENDING MOON | Shaadee Ardha Chandra Puja

Sunday 22nd of November

This is the ritual of the inner marriage for Shaadee means marriage. This is the release of the work of this Moon phase. Not much can or should be said about union and marriage. If marriage is born of true Love it is the completion of Yog, yet some marriages are born of elements other than Love and, on this night of Tantric ritual, we shall explore the connection between Love, desire and how we ground our desire in Love in our lives with the objective of accessing great inner knowledge and wisdom about ourselves. This is a Moon phase for investigating and revealing the face of Love. As stated above, this is the Sukkha phase of the Moon (a time of intense power) when we reap the fruits planted on the Siddha phase of the moon (8th of November descending moon).

REGISTRATION

ANCIENT & SACRED

On these healing circles you will practice a form of Yoga that is rarely available and accessible even in India today. You will take part in a sacred Yogic tradition that roots itself in India’s native shamanic wisdom & Tantric lineage handed down orally between generations of Yogis, Babas, Sadhus and Fakirs.
You will be exposed to the old tantric ways of seeking profound healing and spiritual awakening, including practicing in darkly-lit spaces to quieten the mind and awaken the senses to the body’s subtle energy currents, holding simple postures for long periods of time, and engaging in powerful breath-work to open-up the body and take the mind into altered states of consciousness.

GENTLE

The practice draws on postures seldom used in modern styles of yoga, ancient sequences that honour the mother and the divine feminine, gently opening-up the body to its highest levels of flexibility through minimal effort.
Integral to this experience will be the exploration of sound-currents present in the body (Nada Yoga) – perhaps one of Yoga’s greatest secrets and one of the most powerful vehicles through which the karmic patterns stored in the chakras can be accessed and released in pursuit of profound healing.

UNIQUE

Unique to this tradition is its simultaneous employment of Asanas (postures), aerobic & anaerobic Pranayam (breathwork), Mudras (gestures), and Mantras (sacred sounds).
The synergy created by the employment of these various yogic tools will lead you into altered states of consciousness and dream-like experiences aimed at facilitating a greater openness to inward journeying and an easier access to your subconscious.

UNBOUND

Because we are going to play with shamanic yogic traditions, the practice will take place outside of clearly time constraints. Generally, the practice will last about 6 hours, but if the group is ready to practice longer we might carry well into the night.

INCLUSIVE

The Circle is open to those interested in the healing path.
Tantra and Yoga practitioners, and those seeking healing, practitioners of the mystic arts. Both advanced and beginners will find a place in this circle.
If you have had or are having psychosis please get in touch directly with us as this is important to know about in this work. The same goes for those with strong mobility issues. Drug and alcohol users also need to inform us of their condition. Thank you.

The practie usually takes place in the dark or darkly-lit spaces.
The pictures below were taken in daylight to capture the flow of a practice.

BOONATH

ben2

BOONATH was born into a life of yoga. He grew up between Europe and India and was introduced as a child to yoga through his grandparents who were on both sides yoga practitioners.
His grandparents took him on his first Himalayan pilgrimage when he was just seven years old and he has been exposed to the world of yogis ever since.
Boonath has taken  initiation into the left hand path (that’s the path of the heart) and specialises in the branch of Chandra Parampara, that is a secret style of Moon practice that works with the night forces. It is a style of tantra that goes very deep into the subconscious roots It is first and foremostly a Healing System. Most of his family still lives in India and he has been travelling there regularly throughout his life  in pursuit of yoga. He has worked closely in apprenticeship with elders in the line of Siddha systems of healing and holds much knowledge in the use of rituals, mantras and body/spirit healing methods among other things.
Boonath has been working in this line and helping people with the implementation of these techniques for over 25 years to successfully overcome mental and physical problems, from chronic pain to addiction.
Boonath’s healing and yoga work sees him travelling across the whole of Europe to give workshops and healing sessions.  His travels and yoga workshops
continue to benefit people in deprived circumstances.
In recent years Boonath has been living and teaching yoga in Germany where he has a network of students. It was in Berlin that Boonath met Kim, with whom Boonath co-founded Working with the Shadow in 2014.

Formal studies and encounters have all left their impression on Boonath, but his teachings are deeply rooted in the Shamanic traditions of the mystical Babas and Fakirs of India, with whom Boonath has been studying closely since childhood to the present day.

KIM

KIM is an Eco-Activist turned Yogi and the founder of Healing in the Willows, the retreat company hosting Working with the Shadow, which he developed in 2014 in collaboration with Boonath, who he assists with the teaching. Kim discovered Yoga in 2005, following a burn-out at work that brought him onto the path of ‘Yog’. Kim had spent over 10 years coordinating international environmental campaigns in Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin for major environmental NGOs, including Greenpeace, WWF, Friends of the Earth, ActionAid, and many others.
Kim practiced Yoga with many teachers from several modern styles of Yoga (including Iyengar, Astanga, Vinasa, Bikram, Sivananda, Scaravelli, Kundalini) all over Europe, India and further afield. In 2011 Kim set up a first yoga collective in Berlin, which he then expanded to a new location in 2013, in one of the economically deprived areas of town that was undergoing gentrification. The collective brought together a variety of local teachers to promote yoga on a donation basis within the surrounding community unable to afford the increasing cost of living. It was there that Kim met Boonath and, through Boonath, that his understanding of what Yoga is and what Yoga can do shifted entirely. Boonath’s rare and ancient Tantric lineage revolutionised Kim’s understanding of Yoga and initiated him into a mystical healing journey that impacted strongly also on Kim’s activist work.
Since then Kim has been collaborating with Boonath on developing Working with the Shadow through the retreats, workshops and online classes.

“It shifted my understanding of what Yoga actually is,
on a fundamental level”
